Health News

March is National Kidney Month

March is National Kidney Month, and ActivStyle would like to help raise awareness of this a serious condition that affects more than 30 million American adults.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) means the kidneys are damaged and can’t filter blood the way they should. The damage to kidneys happens slowly over a long period of time and can cause wastes to build up in the body.

The kidneys’ main job is to filter extra water and wastes out of the blood to make urine. To keep the body working properly, the kidneys balance the salts and minerals—such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium, and potassium—that circulate in the blood. Kidneys also make hormones that help control blood pressure, make red blood cells, and keep bones healthy and strong.

Because there are little to no signs of the condition, most people are not even aware that they have kidney disease until it reaches the later stages, including kidney failure. If the kidneys fail, the person affected will need dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain proper health.

The sooner that someone knows they have kidney disease, the sooner they can make changes to protect the kidneys.

Who is at risk for CKD?
Diabetes is the number one cause of kidney disease and high blood pressure is the second leading cause, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. People with heart disease are also at risk for kidney disease. Research shows a strong link between kidney disease and heart disease. Family history of CKD can also be a risk factor. If a close family member like your mother, father, sister, or brother has/had kidney disease, you are also at risk for it. Age can also affect kidney function; chances of having CKD increase with age. Your ethnicity can also increase your risk of CKD. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, African Americans are nearly 3 times more likely to be diagnosed with kidney failure compared to Caucasians. Other high-risk groups include Hispanics, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and American Indians.

The Mayo Clinic has published this informative video about CKD.

CKD usually does not have any symptoms until the kidneys are badly damaged. The only way to know how well your kidneys are working is to get tested. Being tested for kidney disease is simple. Ask a doctor about these tests for kidney health:

  • eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate)
  • Urine test
  • Blood pressure test

Unfortunately, kidney damage is usually permanent. While the damage cannot be fixed, one can take steps to keep the kidneys as healthy as possible. One may even be able to stop the damage from getting worse. Here’s what you can do to help maintain kidney health:

  • Control your blood sugar if you have diabetes
  • Keep a healthy blood pressure
  • Follow a low-salt, low-fat diet
  • Keep a healthy weight
  • Exercise at minimum of 30 minutes on most days of the week
  • Limit alcohol intake
  • Do not smoke or use tobacco
  • Talk to your doctor about medicines that can help protect the kidneys

If kidney disease is caught early, kidney failure may be avoided. However, CKD can progress to end-stage kidney failure, which is fatal without artificial filtering (dialysis) or a kidney transplant.

FAQs

Q: The doctor returned the prescription. Why has my client not received their product(s)?

A: Just because a doctor has returned a prescription does not mean we can automatically ship product. In some cases, the prescription is not valid. This maybe because all the information required by the insurance carrier (Medicaid, Medicare or private insurance) is not included on the prescription. If prescriptions are invalid, our team will continue to work with the doctor to obtain a valid prescription.

Q: How long does it take to get the first order shipped?

A: Getting the first order shipped can take 10-14 days. Most often, the products you’re your client needs require a prescription. To obtain a prescription, the team at ActivStyle will fax a prescription request to the doctor to complete and sign and send back to us. Medicaid programs have strict requirements for what information must be on a prescription, and those requirements vary by state. Once we receive a valid prescription, we will be able to process the order. If it has been less than 14 days since the request came in, we will ship right away. If it has been more than 14 days, we must contact the client to confirm that they still need the product. If the client agrees that they still need product, we will then ship the product to them.
